April 2021: I Wasn’t Strong Like This When I Started Out

Have you had that exact thought when reflecting on your career? I know I have.

That’s what makes this the perfect book to kick off our book club!

This is a collection of memories from real nurses compiled by Lee Gutkind. We love sharing our stories with each other, so I can’t wait to be a part of this discussion.

Nursing students, new grads, and experienced nurses can all benefit from reading this book. It will remind you of the times you felt clueless or provide comfort in the fact that this stage will pass.

This book is especially appropriate considering how many challenges the last year has brought. Policy changes every week, a breakdown of the normal hospital structure, and constant fear and uncertainty marked the start of the pandemic. It was difficult for everyone, but I can’t imagine being a brand new nurse starting out in such an unstable environment. Good thing one of our superpowers is being adaptable.

So, here’s how it works:

  • Read the book (preferably)
  • I’m posting some questions here for you to think about after or as you read
  • Over the next 2 weeks feel free to respond to those questions in the comments section. I’ll make another post after that time to share my thoughts and highlight some of the points made in the discussion
  • Don’t forget to vote for next month’s book!

I love reading and I’ve wanted to start a book club since high school, so I’m really excited to hear from you all!

Discussion Questions

  1. Did any of these stories really resonate with you? What were your thoughts?
  2. How do you think you’ve changed since the start of your nursing career? What do you think caused this change?
