Notes on Nursing by Florence Nightingale

Nurse’s week starts May 6, so why not celebrate by reading our guru’s own work? Florence Nightingale set out to teach others how to be a nurse with this book, and I’m curious to see how we measure up. I think it may also be available for free online.

Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult

It may be fiction, but it could happen. A postpartum nurse is reassigned after a couple complains they don’t want a Black nurse touching their baby. Then the baby codes while she is the only nurse around, and she has to decide whether to start CPR or wait for someone else. And this is only the beginning of the story.

Collaborative Caring: Stories and Reflections on Teamwork in Health Care Ed. Suzanne Gordon

Nurses are just one part of the team. This collection explores what teamwork means through different perspectives. There are many different issues that can derail a group, but when done correctly it can result in better experiences for patients and staff. I’m hoping it will make us better at teamwork.
